The Shrines of South Uist

The islands of the Outer Hebrides in Scotland are deeply religious communities. Roughly divided between a predominant Catholic faith in the southern islands of Vatersay, Barra, Eriskay, South Uist and Benbecula to an overwhelming Protestantism in the northern islands of North Uist, Berneray, Harris and Lewis.

The division is evident as you travel the causeways from North to South Uist and find an array of roadside shrines sometimes in the most unusual of places.
